About

Bird in E Minor (029), 2008
Cloudery draws in pen & ink. Each drawing, using pens with points ranging from .2mm to .5mm, takes hours to create. There’s no prior sketching, and neither pencil nor eraser are involved. Unplanned, each grows where the pens take it. Also an accomplished chain maille artisan (with a company called Crescent Maille), she recently described her drawing compared to her other more traditional craft:

“About a year ago my drawing style changed dramatically. I think that my drawings became very much influenced by my chain maille work: suddenly I am drawing with tiny-tipped pens (fractions of a millimeter) in the same way that I prefer to use the smallest possible rings [for my jewelry]. But I am drawing intricate, organic, abstract shapes that flow in a stream-of-consciousness way—it’s almost like ‘mailling’ on paper except I create the beginnings of patterns and then break, free-form—so, totally unlike chain maille. I guess in my artwork I get to exert my freedom to digress, change course, or just meander; that doesn’t happen with the jewelry.”

In October 2008 Cloudery established a shop on Etsy selling original artwork, giclee prints, letterpress editions, photographs and more as a way to support the charity First Book, and other charities such as Kiva and Hope for Haiti Now. For example, listings that benefit First Book donate funds that purchase brand new books for children from low-income families, providing them the opportunity to read and own their first new books. One of the studies cited by First Book states that in middle-income neighborhoods there is an average of 13 books for every child, while in low-income neighborhoods there is an average of one book for every 300 children.

Books donated as of 14 August 2010: 250

Cloudery is in no way affiliated with First Book, nor affiliated with anyone or anything affiliated with First Book, other than being a donor.
